Is there anyone out there?
Hi. I'm new here and see that this community hasn't had posts in a little while so I'm hoping this is still an active group.

I have a number of chronic health problems that I am trying to manage as much as possible through diet. I will need some prescription medications and doctor monitoring for the rest of my life, but would really like to learn as much as possible about natural ways of healing, and hopefully be able to cut back on the supplements and medications I'm taking at some point.

My current diet is a vegan elimination diet to determine food intolerances. I have added back a number of foods successfully but am still somewhat limited, particularly in the spice and flavorings department. I'm aiming for 1400-1600 calories per day since I also have a need to lose some weight. I'd like to know how to optimize my nutrition keeping these considerations in mind.

Do you have any resources you could direct me to? Even if you don't please feel free to comment. Doing so will help me to get a sense for whether this continues to be an active community. Thanks.

Optimal Nutrition

I'll have to do some more research, but in the meantime, there are plenty of things you could do. For instance, bookstores have an extensive section on natural healing and diet now (much better than a few years ago...)

I would also try Yoga and green tea every day if possible.

It is AlWAYS a good idea to stay away from processed foods. Try to eat as many whole foods as possible and stay away from things with sugars, high fructose and other artificial sweetners. Also stay away from fried stuff and if you like to cook, use canola oil or any vegetable oil, or LIGHT olive oil (the regular olive oils loose their nutrients if you cook with them so it is best to just use them for salads and other non-cooked stuff. Bertolli Extra Light or Fillipo Berio Extra Light can be found in any regular supermarket...)

Try not to have a lot of coffee. The acids do wierd things to your stomach and certain types of caffeine will actually slow down your metabolism (Green Tea is different in that regard..)

Any type of Soy or rice Milk is amazing.

Hope this is helpful!

Re: Optimal Nutrition

Thank you. :) It sounds like I'm doing pretty well, based on your description. I haven't tested green tea but should do that soon. I have a Yoga For Dummies DVD that I have been meaning to try, but haven't done yet because I'm kind of clutzy :S

Re: Optimal Nutrition

heheh It's okay. I am a pretty big klutz myself. But what is important is not doing all the fancy stuff. What is important is finding postures that are comfortable for you and that benefit what you are trying to achieve.

Good Luck!

Re: Optimal Nutrition

Thanks for the good luck wishes. Some luck would definitely come in handy right now. But so far so good. As of Tuesday I had lost 32 pounds, among other health improvements. :)

I checked your user info and saw that we have a lot in common! I added you as a friend. Please feel free to add me back if you wish.

Re: Optimal Nutrition

Thanks. I've had thyroid problems for years so there's a lot to lose now that it's finally balanced.
